Uruguay (0-2-0) vs. Spain (1-1-0) — Group H Match Preview

Uruguay and Spain close out Group H at Guadalajara Stadium in Mexico in a match that carries different stakes for each side: Spain, the 2010 world champions and reigning European champions after Euro 2024, come in with 4 points and need at least a point to advance with confidence, while Uruguay sit on two points after two draws. and need a win to have any realistic hope of going through.

Spain’s position is complicated by the fact that they were held 0-0 by debutants Cape Verde in their opener — a result that put cracks in what many assumed would be a dominant group-stage run — before recovering in their second match, while Uruguay, under Marcelo Bielsa in his third World Cup with a third different nation, beat both Brazil and Argentina during CONMEBOL qualifying and arrive as a side with genuine pedigree even if this group has not gone to plan. Lamine Yamal, 18 years old, has been the defining player of Spain’s domestic season — 16 goals and 11 assists in 26 La Liga starts for Barcelona with 117 shots — and alongside Nico Williams and the Ballon d’Or winner Rodri, the Spanish system is technically the most complete in the group.

Federico Valverde of Real Madrid delivered 5 goals and 8 assists in 31 La Liga starts this season for Uruguay’s midfield, while Darwin Nunez at Al-Hilal — 6 goals and 4 assists in 14 Saudi Pro League starts — is the physical presence up front that Bielsa will point at Spain’s defense. The sides met in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, with Spain winning 2-1, and last faced each other in an international friendly in February 2013 where Spain also won 3-1. Uruguay beat both Brazil and Argentina in qualifying and it’s worth noting this is the first Uruguay squad since 2002 without Luis Suarez — a passing of the torch that Valverde and Nunez are still in the process of completing.

Players to Watch: Uruguay vs. Spain

Uruguay

Darwin Nunez — Forward. At Al-Hilal this season, Nunez scored 6 goals and added 4 assists in 14 Saudi Pro League starts — 43 total shots — and he is the battering ram Uruguay will use against Spain’s high defensive line. His combination of speed, physicality, and willingness to run in behind gives Bielsa’s side a threat that Spain’s defenders cannot simply invite inside.

Federico Valverde — Midfielder. The Real Madrid midfielder was one of the standout performers across LaLiga this season, contributing 5 goals and 8 assists in 31 starts with 51 shots — numbers that make him one of the most complete midfielders at the tournament. His engine, his passing range, and his late arrivals into the box give Uruguay a dimension beyond just survival.

Jose Maria Gimenez — Defender. The Atletico Madrid captain — now approaching 97 international caps — will be the organizing force in Uruguay’s defensive line against Yamal, Nico Williams and the movement of Spain’s attack. He made 13 La Liga starts this season and, while his minutes have been carefully managed, his experience at this level is exactly what Uruguay need when the going gets difficult.

Spain

Lamine Yamal — Winger. Eighteen years old and already the player Spain build their attack around, Yamal posted 16 goals and 11 assists in 26 La Liga starts for Barcelona this season — 117 shots — across a domestic campaign that established him as one of the best in the world at his position. He is the player Uruguay’s defensive structure will be specifically designed to contain, which tends to create exactly the opportunities that Nico Williams exploits on the opposite side.

Pedri — Midfielder. The Barcelona midfielder is the conductor between Spain’s defense and attack — 9 assists in 23 La Liga starts this season alongside 2 goals across 21 shots reflect the kind of output you get from a player whose primary skill is moving the ball with purpose. Where Rodri provides the steel, Pedri provides the precision, and Uruguay will need to press him relentlessly to disrupt Spain’s rhythm.

Rodri — Midfielder. The Ballon d’Or winner returned from a long injury absence at Manchester City this season, making 17 Premier League starts and contributing 1 goal across 16 shots in a season defined more by his recovery than by his numbers. At a World Cup, in a system built around his ability to control tempo, those Premier League minutes are less important than the authority he brings to Spain’s midfield — he is the reason Spain keep the ball as long as they do.
