‘The Traitors: New Blood’ Episode 5 Preview

Heading into Episode 5, 17 players remain and the castle is holding a funeral. NBC has confirmed that “Wake of the Living Dead” closes on what Alan Cumming calls the most epic burial the castle has ever seen, with players buried alive, and that the Traitors have been handed a murder in plain sight to carry out in the middle of it.

The mechanism is an apple. A Traitor has to get a Faithful to catch one, and whoever does is murdered that night. Joe Vanella, a funeral director in ordinary life and therefore in his element, has the job of finding someone to take it. The obstacle is that any Traitor tossing fruit at a funeral is a Traitor doing something visible, in a room full of people now actively hunting for exactly that.

What Happened on ‘The Traitors: New Blood’ Last Week?

Need a refresher? Here’s what happened across Episodes 3 and 4 of The Traitors: New Blood, which aired together on September 24.

Episode Recap

Two episodes, two murders and a banishment, and the Faithfuls finished the night further from the truth than they started it. They banished one of their own, lost the one player who had correctly identified a Traitor, and watched the prize pot climb anyway.

Episode 3 was titled “The Traitors Are Watching” and Episode 4 “The Death Parade.”

The Third Traitor

The premiere’s cliffhanger resolved in the castle grounds in the middle of the night. Katie Fites and Xavier Scruggs came face to face with Joe Vanella and Tomica Adams, and both produced the death warrant they had been sent to retrieve, which meant one would be recruited and the other murdered.

Katie made the case that she was a team player, pointing out that she had not voted to banish Madeline Kostopulos because she suspected Madeline was a Traitor and did not want to be seen moving against one of her own. Xavier made the opposite case, and it cost him: he admitted he had been the one floating Katie’s name around the castle, reasoning that if she were banished the turret spot was his. Joe and Tomica heard that as a man who would turn on his own side.

They took Katie and Xavier was murdered on the spot, still convinced he had been the stronger of the two.

The Round Table

Xavier’s empty chair at breakfast set the table talking, and Kriste Lewis came closest to the truth by wondering aloud whether he had been competing for a Traitor spot and lost. Later, new information about the Traitors sent the group searching for connections, and Niyyah Hayes became suspicious of Arisa Thomas based on her interactions with Victor Vollbrechthausen. The theory quickly gained traction and put Arisa firmly in the spotlight.

Victor spent the session trying to turn the group onto Michael and could not make it land. Joe stepped in to defend Katie when her name came up, which is the sort of thing that gets noticed later. Arisa was banished with 13 votes, with the remainder split between Victor and Michael, and left telling the room she had been Faithful from the start.

The Murder

Logan Smith did not come down to breakfast. He had spent the previous day telling people that Katie’s nervous energy did not sit right with him, and Ben McDonnell had agreed she would make a “cutest little perfect Traitor.”

Joe, Tomica and Katie picked him for exactly that reason. The Faithfuls noticed the difference immediately, reading this kill as strategic where Kim Daily’s had felt random, which is accurate and yet, still did not help them.

The Death Parade

The mission that gave Episode 4 its title sent the players fleeing a death parade, scrambling for places on a cart while the rest were left behind. Victor, Morgan Cook, Mark Zgoda and Niyyah missed the first one. Tomica and Kriste made the second, while Sherry Kuehl, Joe, Abby Lee and Clyde Moser stayed back.

It brought the prize pot to $77,000. The episode then closed at the Round Table, where Jay Vinnedge became the first player to openly voice suspicion of one of the three Traitors at the table, telling the group he believed Katie was one.

What is ‘The Traitors: New Blood’ About?

Hosted by Alan Cumming, The Traitors drops a group of players into a Scottish castle and secretly divides them into two groups: the Faithful and the Traitors.

All of the players work together on missions to build a shared prize pot. Throughout the game, the Faithful gather at the Round Table to try to identify the hidden Traitors, while the Traitors secretly murder Faithful players and continue pretending to be on their side. If every Traitor is identified and banished by the end, the Faithful split the pot. If even one Traitor survives, they take the whole thing.

Season 5, titled The Traitors: New Blood, is the first all-civilian season of the American series, with 22 everyday players chosen from more than 80,000 applicants. Players will be competing for a pot worth up to $250,000, and for the first time an extra $15,000 is added every time the Faithfuls successfully banish a Traitor.

Earlier seasons featured a mix of reality stars and other recognizable public figures, many of whom entered the game with established personalities and reputations. This cast arrives with neither, giving everyone a fresh start in the competition.
