Pittsburgh Pirates (26-24) at Toronto Blue Jays (23-27) — Game Preview

The Pittsburgh Pirates arrive at Rogers Centre carrying a 26-24 mark into Toronto, where the Blue Jays sit at 23-27 and need wins at home to dig out of the AL East basement. The bats tell most of the story so far, with Pittsburgh hitting .253 as a team and connecting on 52 home runs against Toronto’s .243 average and 45 long balls. On the mound, Bubba Chandler (1-5, 5.14 ERA) gets the ball for the Pirates opposite Kevin Gausman, the steadier of the two at 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP across 57.1 innings.

Pittsburgh leans on the breakout season of Nick Gonzales, who is hitting .319 from the third-base spot, while Toronto counters with Ernie Clement at second base, batting .296 with a .429 slugging percentage. The third name to track in this one is Oneil Cruz, who leads the Pirates with 33 RBIs while contributing 10 home runs from center field. Pittsburgh will be without right fielder Ryan O’Hearn and starter Jared Jones, and Toronto’s rotation continues to navigate the absences of Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber and Jose Berrios.

Players to Watch: Pittsburgh Pirates vs. Toronto Blue Jays

Pittsburgh Pirates

Nick Gonzales — 3B. The Pirates’ third baseman has been the team’s most reliable bat so far, hitting .319 with a .379 on-base percentage. The .363 slugging mark suggests the production has come from line-drive contact rather than power, which fits the table-setter role he has carved out in front of the Pittsburgh order.

Oneil Cruz — CF. Pittsburgh’s center fielder leads the team with 33 RBIs and has added 10 home runs while batting .257. The combination of power and run production has made him the most dangerous middle-of-the-order presence the Pirates can run out.

Bubba Chandler — SP. Tonight’s starter takes the mound with a 1-5 record and a 5.14 ERA across 42.0 innings, having struck out 36 batters. The 1.52 WHIP points to traffic on the bases, and finding the strike zone earlier in counts at Rogers Centre will be the assignment against the Toronto lineup.

Toronto Blue Jays

Ernie Clement — 2B. Clement is hitting .296 with a .320 on-base percentage and a .429 slugging mark, giving Toronto one of its steadier contact bats. His extra-base production has helped him remain a useful part of the Blue Jays’ infield mix.

Kazuma Okamoto — 3B. Okamoto leads the Blue Jays with 10 home runs and has driven in 27 runs, though the .218 batting average shows the trade-off the Toronto lineup has accepted to chase power from the corner-infield spot. The home-run pace gives the offense a credible threat from the middle of the order even when the rest of the lineup goes quiet.

Kevin Gausman — SP. Gausman is 3-3 with a 3.45 ERA and 53 strikeouts across 57.1 innings, with a 1.05 WHIP that is the best mark among the listed starters in this matchup. With Max Scherzer, Shane Bieber and José Berríos all on the injured list, Gausman remains one of Toronto’s most important healthy starters.
