Norway (2-0-0) vs. France (2-0-0) — Group I Match Preview

Norway and France meet in what is the final Group I match for both sides at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, with both nations having won their first 2 matches and already secured their places in the knockout stage.

France arrive as 2-time World Cup champions (1998, 2018) and the runners-up in Qatar in 2022, ranked No. 1 in the world coming into the tournament and led by coach Didier Deschamps, who has announced this as his final tournament in charge.

Norway, meanwhile, are playing in their first World Cup since 1998 — a 28-year absence — and have done so by arriving off a perfect 8-0-0 qualifying campaign that produced 37 goals, 8 more than any other UEFA team, a record that immediately established them as more than a sideshow.

Kylian Mbappe, France’s captain, carries the weight of history into this match: he needs 5 goals to break the all-time World Cup scoring record, and with 25 goals in 29 LaLiga starts for Real Madrid this season, his form heading into the tournament was exceptional.

Erling Haaland — whose 27 goals across 34 Premier League starts for Manchester City this season represent one of club football’s most relentless recent campaigns — scored 16 goals in qualifying for Norway, a figure that made the selection committee’s job straightforward.

Martin Odegaard, the Arsenal captain who contributed 7 assists during that qualifying run, will be the architect trying to feed Haaland against a French defense that has not conceded in two matches. France beat Colombia 3-1 before the tournament before dropping a surprising 2-1 friendly result to Ivory Coast, then bounced back with a 3-1 win over Northern Ireland; Norway drew 0-0 with Switzerland, defeated Sweden 3-1 in a pre-tournament friendly, and held Morocco 1-1 in a final warmup.

Norway’s coach, Stale Solbakken, played on the 1998 squad that last took the country to a World Cup, a detail that adds an interesting dimension to what could be a famous day for Norwegian football if results go their way.

Players to Watch: Norway vs. France

Norway

Erling Haaland — Forward. Haaland put up 16 goals during Norway’s qualifying campaign, the foundation of that record 8-0-0 run with 37 goals that booked their first World Cup in 28 years, and he comes in having scored 27 times in 34 Premier League starts for Manchester City this season across 126 shots. He will be Norway’s first and most dangerous threat against a French defensive unit, and at 23 years old this is his first major international tournament — a moment that has been building since he established himself as one of club football’s most devastating finishers.

Martin Odegaard — Midfielder. The Arsenal captain was the creative spine of Norway’s qualifying run, contributing 7 assists as the side swept all 8 matches, and he is the player most responsible for translating Haaland’s movement into meaningful chances. Odegaard’s ability to find pockets between France’s defensive and midfield lines will be the tactical subplot worth tracking, particularly against a French side that will be pressing to close out the group at the top.

Alexander Sorloth — Forward. Playing at Atletico Madrid this season, Sorloth provides Norway with a different kind of forward option alongside Haaland — physically imposing, capable of holding the ball under pressure, and a genuine goal threat in his own right. If France’s defenders commit tightly to Haaland, Sorloth can become the outlet that unsettles the shape.

France

Kylian Mbappe — Forward. The France captain posted 25 goals and 5 assists across 29 LaLiga starts for Real Madrid this season — 146 total shots — and he arrives at this tournament with an all-time scoring record in his sights: he needs 5 goals to surpass the record. France are already through with a perfect group stage, which gives Deschamps options on how aggressively to use him here, but Mbappe’s competitive instincts rarely yield to rotation decisions.

Ousmane Dembele — Winger. Playing for Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League this season, Dembele scored 8 goals and contributed 2 assists across 11 starts in that competition, figures that reflect a player who has finally delivered on the consistency his talent always promised. His directness on the right side stretches defensive blocks and creates the space that Mbappe exploits centrally.

Aurelien Tchouameni — Midfielder. The Real Madrid midfielder, who made 31 LaLiga starts this season, is the player who sets the tempo for France in possession and disrupts the transition when they lose it. His 45 shots from midfield this season tell a slightly different story than a traditional defensive-midfielder profile — Tchouameni contributes further forward than the role implies, which makes him difficult to track.
