New York Liberty (21-14) at Connecticut Sun (8-24) — Game Preview
The New York Liberty (21-14) head to Mohegan Sun Arena to face the Connecticut Sun (8-24) on Saturday afternoon, a matchup between two teams heading in very different directions this season. New York averages 90.8 points per game to Connecticut’s 79.7, a double-digit gap that reflects the difference between these two rosters right now. Breanna Stewart drives the Liberty attack with 21.0 points per game on 46.8% shooting from the floor and 84.6% from the free-throw line, while Jonquel Jones controls the paint with 9.4 rebounds per game.
Pauline Astier keeps the offense organized too, averaging 3.5 assists per game against just 1.6 turnovers. Connecticut counters with Brittney Griner, who leads the Sun at 13.2 points per game on 52.7% shooting, and Leila Lacan, who pairs 11.9 points with 4.4 assists per game to run the offense. New York will be without Satou Sabally, Anneli Maley and Leonie Fiebich, and Connecticut is missing Ashlon Jackson and Maria Kliundikova, so both rotations look different than usual.

Players to Watch: New York Liberty vs. Connecticut Sun
New York Liberty
Breanna Stewart — F. Stewart anchors New York’s frontcourt production, averaging a team-high 21.0 points per game while shooting 46.8% from the field. She has been especially reliable at the line too, converting 84.6% of her free throws this season.
Pauline Astier — G. At the point for New York, Astier keeps the offense organized, distributing 3.5 assists per game across 23.3 minutes on the floor. Her ball security stands out as well, with just 1.6 turnovers per game to go with those assists.
Jonquel Jones — C. Down low, Jones does the heavy lifting on the glass, pulling down 9.4 rebounds per game split between 7.2 on the defensive end and 2.2 on the offensive boards. That balance gives New York a complete rebounding threat to throw at Connecticut’s frontcourt.
Connecticut Sun
Brittney Griner — C. Connecticut leans on Griner more than anyone else on the roster, and she has answered with a team-best 13.2 points per game on 52.7% shooting from the field. Her free-throw numbers trail that mark, sitting at 67.2% for the season.
Leila Lacan — G. Lacan handles a dual role for Connecticut, scoring 11.9 points per game while also setting the table with 4.4 assists per game, the top mark on the roster. She logs heavy minutes to do it at 28.4 per game, and her 2.2 turnovers per game reflect the tradeoff that comes with that usage.
Olivia Nelson-Ododa — C. Inside, Nelson-Ododa gives Connecticut a rebounding presence at 6.0 boards per game, with 4.4 coming on the defensive glass and 1.6 on the offensive end. It is modest production next to Jones on the other side, but it is a role Connecticut needs filled every night given its 8-24 record.
