The New Orleans Pelicans were established in 2002 as an expansion team. Instead of drafting a team like a typical expansion would, the owner of the Charlotte Hornets relocated all its players to the new franchise in NOLA. For the first 11 seasons, the team continued to go by the Hornets, until the franchise was bought out and changed to the Pelicans.

The franchise changed its name to the New Orleans Pelicans in honor of Louisiana’s state bird. Out of the team’s 22 seasons, they have had 8 playoff appearances, the last taking place in 2022.

They play their home games at Smoothie King Center, located in New Orleans, Louisiana. Keep up with the latest New Orleans Pelicans info, including standings, stats, news, and much more.

New Orleans Pelicans Logo

As mentioned above, the Pelicans didn’t take on their current name until the start of the 2013 season. Before that, the team continued to use the Hornets logo from their previous time in Charlotte.

After changing over to the Pelicans, however, the logo was completely redesigned to represent the local culture. Not only is the Louisiana state bird the team’s primary logo, but the color scheme – navy, golden and red – take inspiration from the New Orleans flag.New Orleans Flag

Since 2013, the logo has remained the same for the most part, with “New Orleans” written above a pelican with a basketball in its mouth. The classic NOLA symbol, the fleur-de-lis, is placed above the city name on the logo.

Don’t miss a second of the 2023-2024 New Orleans Pelicans basketball season. The team has a chance of performing well it the Southwest Division of the Western Conference, but the team’s ability to make it to the post season largely relies on the health of the Pelicans’ players.

The Pelicans have had a few significant changes to their roster that they are hoping will improve their performance this season. Herb Jones is back with a new contract, and they also picked up Jordan Hawkins and Cody Zeller.

As long as the team’s star players remain healthy – namely Zion Williamson, but also Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum – the team has a fair chance of getting into the playoffs this season.
