‘Coven Academy’ Cast & Characters Guide

Set in New Orleans, the new supernatural series from Freeform follows a group of young witches, warlocks and vampires who meet at an elite academy for magic. As tensions rise inside and outside the academy, the students find themselves caught up in a much larger fight to protect New Orleans.

Coven Academy premieres October 1 at 8 p.m. ET on Freeform (Channel 311). The full season will be available to stream October 2 on Disney+ and Hulu.

Here’s a look at who plays who in Coven Academy:

Malina Pauli Weissman as Briar

Known from: A Series of Unfortunate Events, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Supergirl 

Briar is a sarcastic, sharp-witted teenager from New York who reluctantly arrives at a boarding school in New Orleans. Her father sends her there after she attempts to break into a police station while searching for answers about her mother’s mysterious death. Already skeptical of her new home, Briar gets an even bigger surprise when she learns Crescent Veil isn’t the boarding school she was expecting. It’s actually one of many coven academies around the world, where young witches and warlocks learn to control their magical abilities.

Briar soon discovers that she has telekinetic powers closely tied to her emotions, making her magic especially difficult to control when she’s angry or upset. As she digs into her mother’s past and her family’s connection to the academy, Briar slowly begins to open up and let people into her life, forming close friendships with Tegan and Sasha. She also finds herself drawn to two very different supernatural classmates, warlock Jake and newly turned vampire Ollie.

Malachi Barton as Jake

Known from: Camp Rock 3, Stuck in the Middle, Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires

Jake is a powerful young warlock at Crescent Veil Academy who takes a particular interest in Briar when she arrives at the school. He’s flirtatious and enjoys teasing Briar, particularly because he finds her sarcasm and unwillingness to be impressed by him entertaining. While Briar is only beginning to understand the magical world, Jake is already comfortable in it, with abilities that range from casting spells and moving objects with his mind to making things disappear. As his abilities develop, he also begins learning how to shapeshift.

He has a mischievous streak and enjoys pushing boundaries, but he is also hungry to learn more about his magical abilities. Eager to become more powerful, he begins exploring new forms of magic as Mr. Cole takes him under his wing. At the same time, his growing feelings for Briar put him in the middle of a complicated love triangle.

Jordan Leftwich as Sasha

Known from: Loot, Family Switch

Sasha is one of the witches Briar meets after arriving at Crescent Veil Academy and quickly becomes part of her new circle of friends. Sasha has a strong sense of self and isn’t afraid to speak her mind, even when it puts her at odds with the people around her. Because of that, she can come across as intimidating and stubborn. Despite that tough exterior, she’s deeply loyal and protective of her loved ones.

Sasha has the ability to read minds, which makes getting to know someone a little different when she can hear what they’re really thinking. Knowing what’s going on inside other people’s heads makes Sasha more cautious about who she lets into her own life. But as she grows closer to Briar and Tegan, Sasha has to learn that she can’t handle everything on her own and that sometimes trusting her friends is just as important as trusting herself.

Ora Duplass as Tegan

Known from: Their Town

Tegan is a witch-in-training at Crescent Veil Academy and one of the first friends Briar makes at school. Naturally more comfortable with the magical world Briar has suddenly been thrown into, Tegan helps her adjust to life at the academy and encourages her to embrace this unexpected new side of herself.

She is generally more carefree and adventurous than both Briar and Sasha. Tegan brings a lighter energy to the trio while remaining fiercely loyal to her friends. However, Tegan can sometimes act before thinking, particularly when someone she cares about is threatened. She also has one of the academy’s more unusual magical abilities: chronokinesis, the ability to manipulate the flow of time.

Louis Thresher as Ollie

Known from: Boarders

Ollie is the first person Briar meets when she arrives in New Orleans, picking her up and driving her to what she thinks is Crescent Veil Academy. He introduces himself as an English exchange student looking to experience life in America, but he’s keeping a major secret of his own: Ollie is a newly turned vampire.

Still adjusting to a transformation he never wanted, Ollie is reluctant to embrace his new identity and refuses to feed on human blood. His compassion makes the hunger that comes with being a vampire especially difficult to accept, leaving him caught between what he has become and the person he still wants to be. His growing connection with Briar only further complicates things.

Tiffani Thiessen as Miss Emma Graves

Known from: Alexa & Katie, Saved by the Bell, White Collar

Miss Graves is the formidable head of Crescent Veil Academy and a former student and member of the coven. During her own time at the academy, she attended school alongside Briar’s mother, giving Briar plenty of history to poke around in. She eventually returned to lead the school that helped shape her into the witch she is today.

Miss Graves holds her students to high standards and has little patience for recklessness, especially when magic is involved. While her strict approach can make her intimidating, she is deeply protective of the young witches and warlocks in her care and understands firsthand the challenges that come with learning to control their abilities.

Devon Sawa as Mr. William Cole

Known from: Final Destination, Idle Hands, Now and Then, Casper

Mr. Cole is a brilliant and powerful warlock who has just transferred to Crescent Veil Academy as its effortlessly cool new professor. His relaxed teaching style sets him apart from the school’s more traditional faculty, while his impressive magical abilities make it clear there’s more to him than his easygoing demeanor.

He quickly becomes an important mentor to Jake, taking the young warlock under his wing as Jake works to strengthen his abilities and begins pushing the boundaries of his magic. Mr. Cole doesn’t reveal much about himself, though, leaving plenty of questions about his past and what brought him to Crescent Veil Academy in the first place.

Swayam Bhatia as McKenna

Known from: Succession, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Zombies 4: Dawn of the Vampires

McKenna is another witch at Crescent Veil Academy and Jake’s stepsister. Considered the queen bee of the student body, she’s confident and outspoken, rarely holding her opinion back. McKenna is used to knowing exactly what’s happening around the academy and is quite comfortable in her spot at the top of the school’s social hierarchy.

Briar’s arrival shakes up the world McKenna has carefully established, especially as she grows closer to Jake. McKenna doesn’t take kindly to having her position challenged, and she isn’t exactly eager to welcome Briar into the fold.

Brendon Tremblay as Alexander

Known from: Descendants: Wicked Wonderland

Alexander is an experienced vampire who serves as a mentor to Ollie as he adjusts to his new bloodthirsty life. Alexander understands what Ollie is going through better than most, having already learned himself how to control the darker instincts that come with being a vampire. He takes Ollie under his wing, teaching him how to manage his hunger and understand his new abilities. Though his methods can be harsh, Alexander firmly believes that control comes through practice and discipline rather than avoidance.

Keegan Connor Tracy as Tamora

Known from: Descendants, Once Upon a Time, Final Destination 2, 40 Days and 40 Nights

Tamora is Ollie’s aunt and a vampire who deeply distrusts witches, believing their magic poses a genuine threat to ordinary people. Fiercely protective of Ollie, she keeps a close eye on him and isn’t afraid to go full mama bear when she believes he’s in danger. But that protectiveness complicates their relationship as Ollie grows closer to Briar and the other students at Crescent Veil Academy, putting him at odds with his aunt’s deeply held beliefs.

BJ Harrison as Agnes

Known from: Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Tooth Fairy, It: Welcome to Derry, Family Law

Agnes is the immortal archivist of Crescent Veil Academy, where she oversees the school’s vast collection of magical knowledge. Having lived for centuries, she has witnessed generations of witches and warlocks and has accumulated more knowledge about the supernatural world than even members of the faculty could fathom.

Described as eccentric and often a bit cryptic, Agnes doesn’t always give students the answers they’re looking for outright. Instead, she has a habit of letting them uncover the truth for themselves, making her a knowledgeable, yet tricky, resource for anyone digging into the academy’s past.

Nathaniel Logan McIntyre as Teese

Known from: Michael, The Equalizer, Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, All American

Teese is a newly turned vampire struggling to adjust to his new existence while carrying an intense amount of grief. Still coming to terms with both his loss and his transformation, Teese is consumed by emotions that make navigating his new life especially difficult.
