Carolina Hurricanes at Vegas Golden Knights — Game 6 Preview
The Stanley Cup Final returns to T-Mobile Arena for Game 6 with the Carolina Hurricanes one win from the Stanley Cup and the Vegas Golden Knights facing elimination on home ice.
Carolina has displayed one of the postseason’s stingiest defenses, allowing 2.17 goals against per game behind a 91.2 percent penalty kill, though they’ve struggled against Vegas’s potent offense more than against their earlier-round opponents. That VGK attack has been clicking at 3.62 goals for per game and a 21.3 percent power play, but production looks to have slowed a bit with Carolina’s decision to start Brandon Bussi in goal in the last two games after he entered in relief of Frederik Andersen in Game 3.
Mitch Marner has been the engine of the Vegas offense and one of the postseason’s leading scorers with 29 points on 10 goals and 19 assists through 21 games. Brett Howden and Jack Eichel have combined with Marner for a potent attack with potential to score from anywhere. In goal, Carter Hart holds a .909 save percentage and 2.59 goals against average.
Carolina captain Jordan Staal has been elite in the series, scoring in each of the series’ five games so far. Taylor Hall had led the attack with 18 points and a plus-12 rating across the run alongside linemates Jackson Blake and Logan Stankoven, and the Canes’ top Svechnikov-Aho-Jarvis line seems to have woken up as well.
The Hurricanes seized control with a 4-2 win in Game 5 at home after the teams split the first four. For Vegas the stakes are as high as they get in NHL hockey: Win and force Game 7, or watch Carolina skate with the Cup to conclude what has already been hailed as one of the most exciting series in Stanley Cup Final history.

Players to Watch: Carolina Hurricanes vs. Vegas Golden Knights
Carolina Hurricanes
Taylor Hall — LW. Carolina’s offense has run through Hall, who shares the team scoring lead with 18 points and owns a team-high plus-12 rating across the playoffs. The 12 assists in that total mark him as the connector on the Hurricanes’ top six.
Logan Stankoven — C. The goal-scoring lead for Carolina belongs to Stankoven, whose 11 markers pace the team and pair with 4 assists for 15 points and a plus-6 rating. Two have come on the power play, and his 54 shots show how often he gets to the net.
Jackson Blake — RW. On the other wing, Blake has matched Hall’s output with 18 points of his own on 6 goals and 12 assists and a plus-6 mark. That second-wave scoring keeps opponents from keying on a single Carolina line.
Frederik Andersen & Brandon Bussi — G. Carolina has been the steadier presence in the goaltending matchup thanks to the tandem of Andersen and Bussi. Andersen posted a 1.89 goals against average and a .910 save percentage after starting the first 15 games of the playoffs and his 3 shutouts give Carolina the kind of postseason netminding that has carried it to the brink of the Cup. Andersen left Game 3 after giving up four goals in the first half of play, and Bussi was exceptional in relief, earning the start in Games 4, 5 and, likely, Game 6 if Carolina opts to ride with his hot hand.
Vegas Golden Knights
Mitch Marner — RW. Marner has been the engine of the Vegas attack this spring, leading the team with 29 points on 10 goals and 19 assists through 21 games. His plus-14 rating tops the Knights’ skaters, and 54 shots on goal reflect a player who drives the offense at even strength and on the power play.
Jack Eichel — C. Down the middle, Eichel does his damage as a distributor, piling up 20 assists on the way to 22 points across 21 games. A plus-5 rating and 50 shots fill out a two-way game that lets Vegas generate offense away from Marner’s line.
Brett Howden — C. The breakout of the Vegas run has been Howden, whose 14 goals lead the club and pair with 4 assists for 18 points and a plus-13 rating. That finishing has turned a depth role into one of the defining stories of the postseason.
Carter Hart — G. Hart has handled the Vegas crease through four rounds, going 14-7 with a .909 save percentage and a 2.59 goals against average over 21 starts. His 559 saves underline the volume the Knights have asked him to absorb.
What is the Carolina Hurricanes vs. Vegas Golden Knights Series Record?
The Carolina Hurricanes lead the Stanley Cup Final 3-2 after taking Game 5 at home by a 4-2 score. Vegas had grabbed Game 1 by a 5-4 margin and Game 3 in double overtime, while Carolina answered with a 4-3 overtime win in Game 2 and a 5-3 win in Game 4 before pulling ahead in Game 5. A Vegas win tonight forces a winner-take-all Game 7 back in Raleigh.
