What Is ‘Tenzing’ About?
On May 29, 1953, Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa mountaineer from the Himalayas, and New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary became the first people confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain. Their achievement came after decades of unsuccessful expeditions, many of which ended in tragedy as climbers lost their lives attempting to reach the summit.
Tenzing revisits the historic British expedition, but tells the story primarily through Norgay’s perspective. An experienced climber who had spent years working on Everest expeditions, Norgay dreams of reaching the summit himself. With encouragement from his wife, Dawa, and support from expedition secretary Jill Henderson, he fights for the opportunity to join the climbing team led by Colonel John Hunt rather than remain in a supporting role.
As the expedition moves forward, Norgay forms a partnership with Hillary, and the two prepare to take on the mountain’s most dangerous stretches. Along the way, the film explores the cultural and class divisions within the expedition, as well as Norgay’s spiritual connection to Everest, which he knows as Chomolungma.

‘Tenzing’ Cast Guide
Here’s a closer look at the cast of Tenzing, including the actors bringing real-life historical figures to the screen and the new characters introduced to help tell the story:
Genden Phuntsok as Tenzing Norgay
Known from: Snow Leopard, Wind, Jinpa
Genden Phuntsok stars as Tenzing Norgay, the legendary Sherpa mountaineer who became one of the first two people confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1953.
Born in the Himalayan region, Norgay spent years working as a porter and climbing guide on Everest expeditions, developing an extraordinary knowledge of the mountain and the skills needed to navigate its dangerous terrain. Despite his experience, he faced barriers in an era when European climbers often received greater recognition than the Sherpas who helped make their expeditions possible.
For Norgay, climbing Everest was more than a professional ambition. He had developed a deep spiritual connection to the mountain, known to Tibetans as Chomolungma, and was determined to prove himself as a mountaineer in his own right. His years of experience, quiet confidence and perseverance made him an invaluable member of the 1953 expedition, even as he continued to challenge the expectations placed on Sherpa climbers.
Tom Hiddleston as Edmund Hillary
Known from: The Avengers, Loki, The Night Manager, The Life of Chuck, Muppets Most Wanted
Tom Hiddleston plays Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand mountaineer who made history alongside Tenzing Norgay as one of the first two people confirmed to reach the summit of Mount Everest.
Born in Auckland, New Zealand, Hillary developed a passion for mountaineering at a young age. He completed his first major climb of Mount Ollivier in 1939 and went on to summit Mount Cook, New Zealand’s highest peak, in 1948. He later gained experience in the Himalayas, participating in a 1951 reconnaissance expedition to Everest and an unsuccessful attempt to climb Cho Oyu in 1952. Outside of mountaineering, Hillary worked as a beekeeper alongside his father and brother.
Known for his determination, physical endurance and practical approach to climbing, Hillary forms a close partnership with Norgay as the two prepare for their historic ascent. Despite their different backgrounds, they develop a mutual respect built on trust and a shared understanding of the dangers they face on the mountain.
Willem Dafoe as Colonel John Hunt
Known from: Spider-Man, The Lighthouse, At Eternity’s Gate, The French Dispatch, Nosferatu
Willem Dafoe takes on the role of Colonel John Hunt, the British Army officer and experienced mountaineer who led the successful 1953 expedition to Mount Everest.
Before taking command of the expedition, Hunt had spent years serving in the British military while developing his mountaineering skills in the Alps and Himalayas. His experience climbing at high altitudes, combined with his military background, made him a strong candidate to lead the ambitious expedition after several previous attempts to conquer Everest had failed.
As expedition leader, Hunt is responsible for assembling the climbing team, coordinating supplies and establishing a strategy for reaching the summit. His leadership and careful planning are essential for success.
Caitríona Balfe as Jill Henderson
Known from: Outlander, Belfast, Ford v Ferrari, The Amateur, Now You See Me
Caitríona Balfe plays Jill Henderson, the secretary of the 1953 British Mount Everest expedition and a key supporter of Norgay’s ambitions.
Working behind the scenes, Jill helps coordinate the expedition’s preparations and becomes one of the people who recognizes Norgay’s abilities as an experienced mountaineer. While many of the British climbers view the Sherpas primarily as support personnel, Jill recognizes Norgay’s potential to play a much greater role in the climb.
Her encouragement helps Norgay push for the opportunity to reach the summit, making her an ally as he navigates the expectations and social divisions surrounding the expedition. Unlike some of the film’s central figures, Jill does not appear to be based on a specific historical person, but rather inspired by those who worked behind the scenes to support the expedition.
Thinley Lhamo as Dawa Norgay
Known from: Shambhala, Hari, Naakaa
Thinley Lhamo plays Dawa Norgay, Tenzing’s wife and a source of encouragement as he pursues his dreams.
While Tenzing spends much of his life working on dangerous expeditions in the Himalayas, Dawa represents the family that waits anxiously for him at home. She understands how deeply connected he is to the mountain, but also knows the risks involved in attempting a climb that has already claimed numerous lives.
Although the film presents Dawa as Tenzing’s wife, the character appears to be a fictionalized portrayal rather than a direct representation of his real-life spouse. Historically, Tenzing’s first wife, Dawa Phuti, died in 1944, and he was married to his second wife, Ang Lahmu, during the 1953 expedition.
Tenzin Dalha as Young Tenzing
Known from: Shambhala, Rana Naidu, The Family Man, The Great Escape
Tenzin Dalha plays a younger version of Tenzing Norgay, exploring the early experiences that shaped his passion for mountaineering. Growing up in the Himalayan region, Tenzing developed a fascination with the mountains before moving to Darjeeling, India, where he began working as a porter on climbing expeditions.
Johnny Flynn as George Mallory
Known from: Stardust, MobLand, The Outfit, Operation Mincemeat, EMMA., Lovesick
Johnny Flynn plays George Mallory, the British mountaineer whose disappearance on Mount Everest became one of the greatest mysteries in climbing history for decades. Mallory participated in three British Everest expeditions during the 1920s and was among the first climbers to attempt reaching the summit.
In June 1924, he and fellow climber Andrew Irvine vanished during their final ascent, reportedly just 800 feet from the summit, raising a question that remains unanswered: Did they reach the summit before they died? Mallory’s body was discovered in 1999, but whether the pair successfully reached the top remains unknown. His story serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by those who attempted to conquer Everest before Norgay and Hillary.
