Players to Watch: St. Louis Cardinals vs. Atlanta Braves

St. Louis Cardinals

Jordan Walker — RF. Walker is hitting .290 with 18 home runs and 58 RBIs, and his .516 slugging percentage places him among the Cardinals’ most dangerous hitters in a lineup that ranks 43-38 on the season. His .343 OBP gives him the ability to work counts and create opportunities, making him a threat whether the Cardinals are chasing or protecting a lead.

Alec Burleson — 1B. Burleson has quietly put together one of the Cardinals’ most consistent offensive seasons, batting .280 with 13 home runs and 57 RBIs across 80 games. His .348 OBP and .476 slugging percentage reflect a balanced approach at the plate — he generates both contact and extra-base power, and his RBI total nearly matches Walker’s despite fewer home runs.

Iván Herrera — DH. The most patient bat in the Cardinals’ lineup, Herrera carries a .397 on-base percentage — the highest among the three St. Louis hitters in tonight’s preview — while batting .256 with 10 home runs and 35 RBIs. Getting on base at that rate is the kind of production that keeps innings alive and puts pressure on opposing pitchers, even when the batting average is modest.

Atlanta Braves

Matt Olson — 1B. Olson paces the Braves in home runs with 20 and RBIs with 52, the kind of middle-of-the-order production that Atlanta’s offense has relied on through the first half of the season. He’s batting .276 to go with that power, a combination that makes him the Braves’ clearest threat for the decisive hit in a close game.

Michael Harris II — CF. Harris leads the Braves in batting average at .297, with a .496 slugging percentage that undercuts any notion that he’s a singles-only hitter. His .329 OBP pairs with that slugging mark to give Atlanta a legitimate two-way threat in center field who can hurt pitchers both by making contact and by doing damage when he connects.

Drake Baldwin — C. Catching is a position where power often comes at a premium, and Baldwin has delivered it: 14 home runs and 39 RBIs in 59 games, with a .463 slugging percentage. His .337 OBP is solid for the position, and his production behind the plate has been one of the quieter stories in Atlanta’s strong first half, filling the gap left by the injured Sean Murphy.
