A man sits down on a 2 a.m. subway train in Philadelphia, clocks a fellow passenger showing every textbook sign of a suicide bomber and decides to intervene. That’s the opening of Reacher Season 4, the latest entry in the hit Prime Video action thriller series based on Lee Child’s books.

This season bucks the small-town muscle work of earlier seasons, instead sending the titular Jack Reacher into the urban sprawl of Philadelphia as he chases a conspiracy that runs through the highest levels of government, the Pentagon, a congressional campaign and a terror cell.

Jack Reacher

Jack Reacher is a former Army military police officer who drifts through the country with only a toothbrush to his name, solving other people’s dire problems simply because he just can’t seem to walk away from or ignore them.

Reacher Season 4 drops him into the back of a near-empty Philly subway car in the early morning hours, where he notices a woman displaying all the hallmarks of a suicide bomber. He approaches to help, but she pulls a gun and turns it on herself. The local police want the file closed by morning, but Reacher wants to know who she was, why she got on that train and why she did what she did.

What he finds in his investigation raises the stakes in the series to new heights: the Gone Tomorrow-inspired story unfolds more like a spy thriller than the police procedural mysteries of prior seasons, layering together Pentagon secrets, a congressman with a buried past and a mysterious mother-daughter duo from Indonesia.

Reacher spends most of it, as usual, with minimal backup, working in a city that wants the case to go away and – as usual – the body count starts to climb. Reacher has always been a pretty violent show, but the showrunners have called this the darkest season yet.

Detective Tamara Green

Played by: Sydelle Noel

Tamara Green is the Philadelphia police detective who gets assigned the subway case and, against her own better judgment, ends up Reacher’s closest ally inside the department. She’s the one cop willing to agree with Reacher that the idea that a dead woman on a train is unusual and warrants more than a closed case file – especially after various federal investigators and thugs begin dogging Reacher. That instinct pulls her straight into the conspiracy he is working to uncover.

Jacob Merrick

Played by: Christopher Rodriguez-Marquette

Known For: Barry (2018), Alpha Dog (2006), Fanboys (2009), Freddy vs. Jason (2003)

Jacob Merrick is a small-town New Jersey cop and the adoptive brother of the woman who died on the train. He shows up looking for answers and finds Reacher already pulling at the same threads. Merrick has the police background to assist Reacher in his investigation, but his connection to the case makes the stakes and emotional connection far higher for him.

John Sampson

Played by: Marc Blucas

Known For: Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1999), Underground (2016), Necessary Roughness (2011), First Daughter (2004)

John Sampson is a U.S. congressman with a decorated military record and a secret from his service days that he has spent his entire political career trying to keep buried.

Samson is the kind of antagonist we’ve come to expect in a Reacher story: Polished, plausible and surrounded by handlers and questions. The deeper Reacher digs into the case and how the woman on the train spent her final days, the more leads tie back to Sampson’s campaign.

Lila Hoth

Played by: Agnez Mo

Lila Hoth presents herself as a young woman searching for information about her family’s past and looking for a cure for her own cancer, but it soon becomes clear that many parts of her story are inconsistent – and that she and her mother, Amisha, may not be exactly who they say they are.

Amisha Hoth

Amisha Hoth is Lila’s mother, the older half of the mother-daughter partnership whose real motives appear buried under layers of manufactured backstory. She presents as frail and grieving, but there’s more than meets the eye to this mother-daughter pair.

Russell Plum

Played by: Kevin Weisman

Known For: Alias (2001), Marvel’s Runaways (2017), The Blacklist (2013)

Russell Plum is a disgraced Washington-based investigative reporter whose work mostly involves covering the CIA. His sleuthing soon sees him come into contact with Reacher, and he becomes another ally in his investigation.

Weisman fits right into this role: He’s best known from another spy thriller from the early 2000s, Alias, where he played the frantic but fan-favorite tech enthusiast Marshall Flinkman.

Detective Shaun Docherty

Played by: Kevin Corrigan

Known For: Goodfellas (1990), The Departed (2006), Pineapple Express (2008), Grounded for Life (2001)

Docherty is another Philly detective working the case alongside Tamara. He’s a city cop navigating the gap between a case that the top brass wants to see closed and what the evidence Tamara and Reacher uncover actually shows. Corrigan is tailor-made to play a city cop in this sort of role: He has been doing it his whole career.

Elspeth Sampson

Played by: Kathleen Robertson

Known For: Beverly Hills, 90210 (1994), Boss (2011), Murder in the First (2014)

Elspeth Sampson is Congressman John Sampson’s wife. She’s close enough to his secrets to matter and sharp enough to be more than a campaign accessory. In a season built around people who aren’t what they appear to be, it’s clear that this seemingly typical politician’s spouse isn’t just standing behind a podium with her husband.
