Portland Fire (8-10) at Chicago Sky (5-12) — Game Preview

The Portland Fire bring an 8-10 record into Wintrust Arena to face the Chicago Sky, who enter this Friday matchup at 5-12 and looking to turn things around at home.

Fire guard Carla Leite has been central to what Portland does offensively, generating 13.9 points and 5.6 assists per game while connecting at 43.2 percent from the floor, and she’s been reliable at the line at 87.4 percent when defenses send her there. On the home side, Skylar Diggins anchors the Chicago offense with 14.6 points and 4.7 assists per game across 29.3 minutes, though her 38.9 percent shooting has been a headwind all season. Where Diggins manages the ball, Kamilla Cardoso controls the glass, pulling down 8.6 rebounds per game with 2.6 of those coming on the offensive end. Emily Engstler provides Portland a quiet but useful presence on the boards at 4.7 rebounds per game, doing most of her work defensively with 3.6 per contest on that end.

Chicago will be short handed in a meaningful way, with Courtney Vandersloot, DiJonai Carrington, and Rickea Jackson all sidelined, thinning the Sky’s rotation and putting more responsibility on Diggins to generate offense.

Players to Watch: Portland Fire vs. Chicago Sky

Portland Fire

Carla Leite — G. Running Portland’s offense from the guard spot, Leite is putting up 13.9 points and 5.6 assists per game while shooting 43.2 percent from the field. Her 87.4 percent free-throw rate makes her a legitimate problem when defenses get physical, though her 3.0 turnovers per game reflect the burden of carrying the Fire’s playmaking load.

Emily Engstler — F. Engstler does the underrated work that keeps Portland competitive on the glass, averaging 4.7 rebounds per game with 3.6 of them coming on the defensive end. Her 1.1 offensive rebounds per game add some extra possessions, and she brings the kind of physicality that the Fire lean on against bigger interior lineups.

Chicago Sky

Skylar Diggins — G. Diggins leads Chicago in scoring at 14.6 points and in creation at 4.7 assists per game, logging 29.3 minutes a night as the Sky’s primary initiator. Her shot selection has been the ongoing tension of her season — 38.9 percent from the field — but she converts at 80.2 percent from the line when the game slows down, keeping her dangerous late. With only 1.6 turnovers per game at her usage level, ball security is not the problem.

Kamilla Cardoso — C. The primary force in Chicago’s front court, Cardoso averages 8.6 rebounds per game and ranks among the most productive post rebounders in the league, pulling 6.1 boards on the defensive end and 2.6 on offense. Her presence around the rim gives Diggins a reliable dump-off option and makes the Sky’s interior harder to attack in transition.
