Iraq’s road to the World Cup looks much different: They are the 48th and final team to claim a place in the bracket, dragged across the line by a 21-match campaign that stretched 28 months, the longest grind of anyone in the field. It’s their first appearance since 1986, ending a 40-year absence. They go after the Cup with Aymen Hussein and his 33 international goals serving as the heart and spine of a team.

Aymen Hussein — ST. Thirty-three goals for the national team tell you where Iraq’s hopes live. Hussein is the striker Graham Arnold trusts to turn rare chances into real ones, and against a Norway defense that conceded little in qualifying, Iraq will need every ounce of that finishing.
Ali Al-Hamadi — ST. He broke ground his country had never touched, becoming the first Iraqi to play in the Premier League. Now on loan at Luton Town, Al-Hamadi knows the physical edge of European football firsthand, and that familiarity matters when the opponent is a Norway side packed with players from the same leagues.
Jalal Hassan — GK. The armband and the gloves both belong to Hassan, who has earned 100 caps guarding Iraq’s net. Facing Haaland and Alexander Sorloth, he may be the busiest man on the pitch, and his calm could be the difference between a heavy night and a foothold for a country back at the World Cup after four decades away.

Erling Haaland — ST. For all he has won at Manchester City, the biggest stage in international football has eluded him until now. Haaland scored 16 goals as Norway powered through qualifying, and his first major tournament arrives at last. One lapse in the Iraqi back line is usually all he needs.
Martin Odegaard — MF. If Haaland is the finish, Odegaard is the thought behind it. The Arsenal playmaker wears the captain’s armband and supplied 7 assists during the qualifying run, threading the passes that connect Norway’s midfield to its strikers. Slow him down and you slow the whole team.
Alexander Sorloth — ST. Playing second striker to Haaland would frustrate most forwards, but Sorloth makes it work. The Atletico Madrid man wins balls in the air, drags defenders into uncomfortable spaces and gives Solbakken a way to attack that does not run solely through one number nine.
