Denver Broncos at Kansas City Chiefs — Game Preview

There will be no easing into the season for Denver or Kansas City. The AFC West rivals meet Monday night at Arrowhead Stadium, where the defending division champion Broncos will try to extend a three-game winning streak over the Chiefs.

The game’s central storyline is Patrick Mahomes’ return nine months after a season-ending knee injury. Kansas City says its offense will not be restricted, but keeping Mahomes comfortable could be difficult. Starting left tackle Josh Simmons is out, leaving undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson to make his NFL regular season debut against a Denver defense that has led the league in sacks two years running.

That matchup should shape Kansas City’s approach. Expect Andy Reid to lean on quick throws and new running back Kenneth Walker III, limiting Denver’s opportunities to unleash Nik Bonitto in obvious passing situations. If the Chiefs fall behind the chains, the Broncos’ defensive front can take control of the night.

Denver presents a different challenge. Bo Nix returns with a deeper group of playmakers, headlined by newcomer Jaylen Waddle alongside Courtland Sutton and Marvin Mims Jr. Their speed could expose a Kansas City secondary already missing Chamarri Conner, although Steve Spagnuolo’s pressure packages will test Nix’s protection calls and composure in one of the NFL’s loudest environments.

Players to Watch: Denver Broncos vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Denver Broncos

Bo Nix — QB. Nix went 6 of 9 for 76 yards and a touchdown this preseason, a small sample that still produced a 129.9 rating heading into his first regular-season snap of the year. He gets to open the season on the road against a Kansas City defense that will be seeing him live for the first time in 2026.

Courtland Sutton — WR. Sutton caught 3 of his targets for 60 yards in the preseason, including a 40-yard grab that was his longest gain of the summer, a 20.0-yard average per catch. That kind of big-play preseason work lines him up as Denver’s top outside threat heading into the opener.

Nik Bonitto — LB. Bonitto logged 3 tackles and a pass defended in Denver’s preseason games, giving the Broncos an edge presence they will lean on against a Kansas City offense that ranked below Denver in yards per game a season ago. His job tonight is setting an early tone up front.

Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes — QB. Mahomes threw for 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns with 11 interceptions in 2025, finishing sixth in the NFL with a 68.5 QBR. His return puts the offense back in the hands of Kansas City’s most important player and gives the Chiefs their best answer against Denver’s aggressive pass rush.

Kenneth Walker III — RB. Walker rushed for 1,027 yards on 221 carries with Seattle last season, averaging 4.6 yards per attempt and scoring five touchdowns. He also contributed 31 receptions for 282 yards. Now in Kansas City, Walker gives Andy Reid a proven lead back who can keep the offense out of obvious passing situations and reduce the pressure on Mahomes.

Rashee Rice — WR. Rice caught 53 passes for 571 yards and five touchdowns despite appearing in only eight games in 2025. His ability to create after the catch makes him a key part of Kansas City’s quick passing game, particularly against a Denver defense built to disrupt slower-developing plays.
