Cleveland Browns at Jacksonville Jaguars — Game Preview

The Cleveland Browns open their season on the road against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Stadium on September 13, with no history between the two teams to lean on this early. Jacksonville’s offense ran well ahead of Cleveland’s a season ago, averaging 351.9 total yards per game to the Browns’ 282.4, and the gap widened further on the scoreboard, where the Jaguars scored 27.9 points per game against Cleveland’s 16.4.

Shedeur Sanders enters the opener as Cleveland’s quarterback coming off a season that produced 1400 passing yards, 7 touchdowns and 10 interceptions on a 56.6% completion rate, and he opens against a Jacksonville pass rush fronted by Josh Hines-Allen’s 8.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss, while Trevor Lawrence brings a steadier track record into the game after throwing for 4007 yards, 29 touchdowns and a 91.0 rating last season against a Browns front led by Jared Verse’s 7.5 sacks and 11 tackles for loss.

Quinshon Judkins gives Cleveland a downhill running threat after totaling 827 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns on 230 carries a season ago, and a heavier workload for him would take some pressure off Sanders in his first true test of the year. Jacksonville arrives a little banged up at receiver, with Brian Thomas Jr. listed as questionable for a shoulder injury, which could push more of the passing-game workload toward Parker Washington, who caught 58 passes for 847 yards and 5 touchdowns a season ago.

Players to Watch: Cleveland Browns vs. Jacksonville Jaguars

Cleveland Browns

Shedeur Sanders — QB. Cleveland’s quarterback managed 1400 passing yards and 7 touchdowns last season, though 10 interceptions and a 56.6% completion rate point to plenty of room for growth. His 68.1 passer rating ranked toward the bottom of the league, and cleaning up the turnovers will go a long way toward keeping this offense competitive against a more explosive Jacksonville unit.

Quinshon Judkins — RB. The Browns lean on Judkins as their primary ball carrier, and he answered with 827 rushing yards and 7 touchdowns on 230 carries a season ago. His 3.6 yards-per-carry average points to a back who wins through volume and short-yardage work rather than explosive runs, which fits an offense that finished near the bottom of the league in total yards per game.

Jared Verse — DE. Opposing quarterbacks felt Verse’s presence all last season, as he piled up 7.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss and 58 total tackles off the edge. That combination of pressure and pursuit makes him the player Jacksonville’s offensive line will need to account for on early downs.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Trevor Lawrence — QB. Lawrence threw for 4007 yards and 29 touchdowns last season, backing it up with a 91.0 passer rating and a 60.9% completion rate. Those numbers put him in a different tier than Cleveland’s quarterback, and Jacksonville’s offense will look to him to set the tone early against a Browns defense making its first real evaluation of the year.

Parker Washington — WR. Washington caught 58 passes for 847 yards and 5 touchdowns last season, averaging 14.6 yards per reception in the process. With Brian Thomas Jr. questionable for the opener because of a shoulder injury, Washington could see an expanded role in Jacksonville’s passing game right out of the gate.

Josh Hines-Allen — DE. Hines-Allen’s 8.0 sacks and 12 tackles for loss led Jacksonville’s pass rush a season ago, and his 49 total tackles show a player who impacts the game even when he isn’t getting to the quarterback. He lines up across from a Cleveland front tasked with protecting Shedeur Sanders in his toughest test of the young season.
