No. 18 Tennessee (1-0) at Georgia Tech (0-1) — Game Preview

No. 18 Tennessee brings a 1-0 record into Bobby Dodd Stadium to face Georgia Tech, which sits at 0-1 after its season opener, on September 12, 2026.

The Volunteers arrive as SEC visitors looking to protect their early ranking, while Georgia Tech looks to bounce back in front of its home crowd. Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon opened the season by completing 13 of 17 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns, an efficient debut that has the Volunteers confident in his command of the offense.

Georgia Tech countered with Alberto Mendoza, who went 17 of 23 for 237 yards in his own season debut, giving the Yellow Jackets a passing game capable of matching Tennessee possession for possession. Running back DeSean Bishop gives Tennessee a downhill complement to Brandon, having carried 14 times for 97 yards and a touchdown in the opener. Georgia Tech running back Justice Haynes carried the ball 19 times for 64 yards in his own debut, and the Yellow Jackets will lean on him to control the clock against a Tennessee defense that already produced three sacks from Xavier Gilliam.

Players to Watch: Tennessee vs. Georgia Tech

Tennessee

Faizon Brandon — QB. The Volunteers’ signal caller completed 13 of 17 passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns in the season opener, missing on just four attempts while spreading the ball around the field. His accuracy sets the tone for an offense built to play fast and keep opposing defenses off balance.

DeSean Bishop — RB. Fourteen carries turned into 97 yards and a touchdown for Bishop, who gives Tennessee a physical complement to Brandon’s arm. Expect the Volunteers to lean on him early to control tempo on the road.

Xavier Gilliam — DL. Three sacks in the season opener instantly established Gilliam as the most disruptive force up front for Tennessee. Georgia Tech’s protection schemes will have to account for him on every down.

Georgia Tech

Alberto Mendoza — QB. Despite the loss, Mendoza went 17 of 23 for 237 yards in his debut, numbers that suggest the Yellow Jackets’ passing game can hang with most opponents even in a rebuilding year. He will need that same efficiency to keep pace with a ranked Tennessee team.

Justice Haynes — RB. Nineteen carries produced 64 yards for Haynes, whose workload signals Georgia Tech’s intent to establish the run regardless of the scoreboard. A bigger night on the ground would go a long way toward keeping this game competitive.

Tawfiq Thomas — DT. Thomas recorded a sack in the opener and anchors the interior of Georgia Tech’s defensive line. Slowing down Tennessee’s rushing attack starts with his ability to hold up against the run.
