Southern Miss (1-0) at Auburn (1-0) — Game Preview
Southern Miss carries a 1-0 record into Jordan-Hare Stadium on September 12, 2026, taking on an Auburn team that is also 1-0 through one game this season. Auburn hosts the Golden Eagles as a member of the Southeastern Conference, giving the Tigers a chance to keep their record perfect at home against a Southern Miss squad that opened its own season with a win.
Auburn’s offense will lean on quarterback Byrum Brown, who completed 26 of 35 passes for 259 yards in the opener despite throwing three interceptions, a number he will look to clean up under center. Southern Miss counters with Ethan Hampton, who threw for 180 yards and a touchdown on 13-of-23 passing while adding an interception of his own in the Golden Eagles’ opening win.
On the ground, Auburn running back Jeremiah Cobb managed 53 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries, while Southern Miss’s Steven Robinson was the more explosive back of the two, rushing 23 times for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, Auburn linebacker Xavier Atkins already has a sack to his name, and Southern Miss defensive lineman Will Smith has a half-sack as both defenses try to build on their season-opening form.

Players to Watch: Southern Miss vs. Auburn
Southern Miss
Ethan Hampton — QB. Hampton completed 13 of 23 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown in the season opener while throwing one interception. He gives Southern Miss a pocket passer capable of stretching the field early in games.
Steven Robinson — RB. Robinson carried the ball 23 times for 123 yards and three touchdowns in the Golden Eagles’ first game, establishing himself as the workhorse of the backfield. His between-the-tackles power will be tested against an SEC front seven on the road.
Will Smith — DL. Smith recorded half a sack in Southern Miss’s opener and anchors a defensive line that needs to disrupt Auburn’s rushing attack. His push up front sets the tone for the Golden Eagles’ pass rush plans.
Auburn
Byrum Brown — QB. Brown threw for 259 yards on 26-of-35 passing in Auburn’s opener but must cut down on the three interceptions that marred his first outing. Jordan-Hare Stadium gives him a favorable setting to settle in behind center.
Jeremiah Cobb — RB. Cobb ran for 53 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries in the season opener, giving Auburn a change-of-pace option out of the backfield. Expect the Tigers to lean on him again to control tempo at home.
Xavier Atkins — LB. Atkins already has a sack this season and leads an Auburn defense tasked with containing Southern Miss’s run game. His presence at linebacker gives the Tigers a physical edge in the middle of the field.
