No. 11 Oklahoma (1-0) at Michigan (1-0) — Game Preview
No. 11 Oklahoma brings a 1-0 record into Michigan Stadium on September 12, 2026 to face a Michigan team that also opened its season at 1-0. The nonconference matchup pits the SEC’s Sooners against the Big Ten’s Wolverines in a game that carries early ranking weight for a program still finding its footing outside the Top 25.
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer opened his season by completing 11 of 17 passes for 225 yards and three touchdowns, while Michigan’s Bryce Underwood answered with 170 yards and a touchdown on 12 of 22 throwing, though he also threw an interception in his own debut.
Sooners running back Lloyd Avant carried 15 times for 79 yards and a score, giving Oklahoma a ground complement to Mateer’s arm, while Michigan wide receiver JJ Buchanan turned six catches into 126 yards and a touchdown in his own opener. Up front, Oklahoma’s Adepoju Adebawore and Michigan’s Dom Nichols both got home for pressure in Week 1, with Nichols recording 1.5 sacks to Adebawore’s one.

Players to Watch: Oklahoma vs. Michigan
Oklahoma Sooners
John Mateer — QB. Mateer opened the season by completing 11 of 17 attempts for 225 yards and three touchdowns, numbers that suggest the Sooners’ passing attack found its rhythm early. That kind of efficiency gives Oklahoma a downfield threat against a Michigan defense making its first true test of the year.
Lloyd Avant — RB. The Sooners’ lead back carried 15 times for 79 yards and a touchdown in his debut, a workload that points to Oklahoma leaning on him early against Michigan. His production gives Mateer a complementary ground game rather than a one-dimensional passing attack.
Adepoju Adebawore — DL. Adebawore recorded a sack in the Sooners’ opener and gives Oklahoma’s front a pass-rush presence against a Michigan offense that has to keep Underwood upright.
Michigan Wolverines
Bryce Underwood — QB. Underwood completed 12 of 22 passes for 170 yards and a touchdown in his own season opener, though an interception in that game is something he will look to clean up against a ranked Oklahoma defense. His command of the Wolverines’ offense makes him the swing factor in this one.
JJ Buchanan — WR. Buchanan hauled in six catches for 126 yards and a touchdown to open the year, emerging as Underwood’s top target through one week. Michigan will need a similar workload from him against Oklahoma’s SEC-tested secondary.
Dom Nichols — DE. Nichols already has 1.5 sacks on the season, giving the Wolverines’ front a proven disruptor to send after Mateer and the Oklahoma offensive line.
