Northwestern brings a 2-0 record into Memorial Stadium on Friday night to face No. 5 Indiana, which sits at 3-0 and carries top-five standing into a prime-time home date. For the Hoosiers the assignment is protecting that ranking in Bloomington, while the Wildcats get an early chance to test an unbeaten start against one of the country’s highest-rated programs.
The quarterback matchup gives this one real offensive intrigue, with Josh Hoover completing 37 of 51 passes for 649 yards and 10 touchdowns on the home side as Aidan Chiles counters with 514 yards and four scores on 31-of-46 passing for Northwestern. Hoover has more help in the backfield than most, since Turbo Richard has piled up 315 yards and four touchdowns on 41 carries to keep defenses from sitting back in coverage.
That balance puts pressure on Northwestern linebacker Kobie McKinzie and a defensive front that needs to win on early downs. On the other side, Gavin Sawchuk and his 117 rushing yards gives the Wildcats a way to shorten the game and keep Indiana’s offense off the field.

Northwestern Wildcats
Aidan Chiles — QB. Through the air, Chiles has connected on 31 of 46 attempts for 514 yards and four touchdowns. Coming off Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors, he’ll need to keep that efficiency against a ranked defense on the road to give the Wildcats a chance late.
Gavin Sawchuk — RB. A steady ground game is Northwestern’s best tool for controlling tempo, and Sawchuk has supplied it with 117 yards on 20 carries. Every sustained drive he extends is one fewer possession for the Indiana offense.
Kobie McKinzie — LB. McKinzie has registered a sack from the second level and anchors the middle of the Northwestern defense. His ability to read run fits against Richard could decide how long the Wildcats stay in this one.
Indiana Hoosiers
Josh Hoover — QB. Ten touchdown passes already sit on Hoover’s ledger, along with 649 yards on 37-of-51 passing. The Hoosiers’ offense runs through his decision-making, and a clean night from him keeps Indiana firmly in control at home.
Turbo Richard — RB. With 315 yards and four touchdowns on 41 carries, Richard gives Indiana a home-run threat out of the backfield. He also forces opponents to commit an extra defender to the box, which opens the play-action game for Hoover.
Tobi Osunsanmi — DL. Up front for the Hoosiers, Osunsanmi has produced two sacks and gives the defensive line a consistent source of pressure. Keeping Chiles uncomfortable in the pocket is the clearest path to slowing the Northwestern passing attack.
