New Mexico (2-0) at No. 24 Oklahoma (1-1) — Game Preview
New Mexico arrives unbeaten at 2-0 to face No. 24 Oklahoma, sitting at 1-1, at Memorial Stadium in Norman on September 19, 2026.
Oklahoma carries the ranking and the SEC affiliation into the matchup but comes off a start that has already cost the Sooners a game while New Mexico has yet to lose. Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer has thrown often and thrown well enough to matter, going 28 of 50 for 414 yards with four touchdowns against one interception through two games.
Across the field, New Mexico’s Luke Moga has been the more efficient passer so far, completing 17 of 26 attempts for 198 yards and three touchdowns without the same volume Mateer has needed. The Lobos’ ground attack is where this preview turns interesting, with Scottre Humphrey piling up 174 yards and three touchdowns on 28 carries. Oklahoma will lean on Lloyd Avant, who has carried 24 times for 114 yards and a score, and on a defensive front where Adepoju Adebawore has already logged a sack.

Players to Watch: New Mexico vs. Oklahoma
New Mexico Lobos
Luke Moga — QB. Moga has been the steadiest player on the field for New Mexico, completing 17 of 26 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns. His accuracy has kept the Lobos’ offense on schedule without forcing the issue through the air.
Scottre Humphrey — RB. On the ground, Humphrey has been the engine behind New Mexico’s 2-0 start, carrying 28 times for 174 yards and three touchdowns. That workload and production make him the focal point of the Lobos’ offensive approach heading into Norman.
Brett Karhu — DE. New Mexico’s pass rush runs through Karhu, who already has three sacks on the season. Facing an Oklahoma line that has allowed Mateer to attempt 50 passes in a single game, his ability to get after the quarterback could shape the tempo of this one.
Oklahoma Sooners
John Mateer — QB. Mateer has put the ball in the air 50 times in a game already this season, completing 28 for 414 yards with four touchdowns against one interception. The volume speaks to how much Oklahoma has asked of him early in the year.
Lloyd Avant — RB. Avant gives Oklahoma a complementary ground option, having carried 24 times for 114 yards and a touchdown so far. A more consistent rushing output could ease the burden currently sitting on Mateer’s arm.
Adepoju Adebawore — DL. Along Oklahoma’s defensive line, Adebawore has recorded a sack this season and will look to disrupt a New Mexico offense that has found rhythm running the ball.
