Indianapolis Colts (0-1) at Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) — Game Preview

The Indianapolis Colts (0-1) travel to Arrowhead Stadium to face the Kansas City Chiefs (1-0) on September 20, 2026, with Indianapolis already a game back of Kansas City in the early AFC picture after dropping its opener. Kansas City’s offense piled up 392 total yards and converted better than half its third downs at 52.94%, while Indianapolis managed just 251 total yards and converted only 30.00% of its third-down tries in Week 1, a gap that could prove costly on the road. Daniel Jones threw for 166 yards and a touchdown on 19 of 31 passing in his Colts debut, but he also turned the ball over once, a mistake he will need to avoid against Patrick Mahomes, who countered with 184 yards and two touchdowns on 15 of 27 passing despite an interception of his own. Jonathan Taylor gives Indianapolis a workhorse answer after carrying 19 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns in the opener, and Kansas City will lean on Kenneth Walker III, who ran 23 times for 173 yards and a touchdown, to keep the Colts defense on its heels. DeForest Buckner anchors the Indianapolis pass rush after logging half a sack in Week 1, a number he will need to build on against a Chiefs offense that already piled up 31 points in its own season-opening win.

Players to Watch: Indianapolis Colts vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Indianapolis Colts

Daniel Jones — QB. In his first start under center for Indianapolis, Jones completed 19 of 31 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown, though a lone interception was the one blemish on an otherwise steady debut. He will look to sharpen his decision-making against a Chiefs defense playing in front of its home crowd.

Jonathan Taylor — RB. Taylor carried the ball 19 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns in the Colts’ season opener, giving Indianapolis a reliable ground-game answer even in a losing effort. A workload that heavy figures to continue against a Chiefs defense that will need to account for him on every snap.

DeForest Buckner — DT. A half sack in the season opener was just the start for Buckner, who now faces the challenge of collapsing the pocket on Mahomes while also containing Kansas City’s inside running game. Interior pressure from Buckner could be the difference in how much time Mahomes has to find his receivers.

Kansas City Chiefs

Patrick Mahomes — QB. Mahomes opened his season by completing 15 of 27 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns, and the one interception he threw did not stop Kansas City from picking up a season-opening win. Cleaning that up matters against a Colts defense anchored by DeForest Buckner up front.

Kenneth Walker III — RB. Walker ran the ball 23 times for 173 yards and a touchdown in Kansas City’s opener, the kind of workload that can wear down a defense over four quarters. That kind of production gives the Chiefs a ground-game complement to Mahomes’ passing attack right out of the gate.

L’Jarius Sneed — CB. Coverage responsibilities will fall heavily on Sneed, who piled up eight tackles in Kansas City’s season opener while helping hold up against both the run and the pass. He will have his hands full against a Colts passing attack that includes Alec Pierce, who caught four passes for 61 yards in Week 1.
