Detroit Lions (1-0) at Buffalo Bills (1-0) — Game Preview
The Detroit Lions (1-0) hit the road to face the Buffalo Bills (1-0) at Highmark Stadium on September 17, 2026, with both clubs looking to build on season-opening wins.
Buffalo’s offense totaled 409 yards in Week 1, including 323 net passing yards, while Detroit’s balanced attack produced 369 total yards and converted 38.46% of its third downs compared to Buffalo’s 33.33%. Josh Allen set the tone for that Bills performance, completing 69.0% of his passes for 334 yards, two touchdowns and a 130.5 rating without turning the ball over.
Jared Goff answered by going 26 of 39 for 206 yards and two touchdowns of his own, finishing with a 96.7 rating while directing a Lions offense that also found room on the ground. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs was central to that ground game, piling up 156 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries in the opener.
Buffalo’s Greg Rousseau and Detroit’s Aidan Hutchinson each recorded two sacks in Week 1, suggesting both fronts could shape this matchup up. Buffalo will also be watching the questionable statuses of running back Ty Johnson (hamstring) and safety Cole Bishop (groin) heading into Thursday night.

Players to Watch: Detroit Lions vs. Buffalo Bills
Detroit Lions
Jared Goff — QB. Goff opened the season by completing 26 of 39 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns, numbers that helped power Detroit to a 1-0 start. His 96.7 rating and zero interceptions point to a clean, mistake-free performance behind an offense that also found 165 yards on the ground.
Amon-Ra St. Brown — WR. St. Brown drew a team-high 14 targets in Week 1 and turned them into 10 receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns. His 19-yard long gain shows he can still stretch a defense even on a day built around shorter, high-volume targets.
Aidan Hutchinson — DE. Hutchinson notched two sacks and two tackles for loss in the opener, setting an early tone for a Lions front that finished the week with five sacks as a unit. He’ll look to pressure Josh Allen behind a Bills line that already allowed two sacks of its own in Week 1.
Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen — QB. Allen was nearly flawless to open the season, completing 69.0% of his passes for 334 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, good for a 130.5 rating. He also chipped in 23 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, giving Buffalo a dual-threat dimension at the position.
Dalton Kincaid — TE. Kincaid was Allen’s most explosive target in the opener, turning five catches into 130 yards and a 26.0 average, including a 40-yard reception. That kind of big-play production at tight end gives Buffalo’s passing game a matchup problem regardless of who lines up across from him.
Greg Rousseau — LB. Rousseau matched Hutchinson’s total with two sacks of his own in Week 1, part of a Bills defense that racked up three sacks and 92 total tackles as a unit. He’ll be part of the equation as Buffalo tries to slow down Goff and Detroit’s balanced attack.
