Colorado Buffaloes (2-1) at Baylor Bears (2-1) — Game Preview
Colorado brings a 2-1 record into McLane Stadium in Waco, where Baylor waits with the identical 2-1 mark and a noon kickoff on home turf. Neither side carries a poll ranking, and it’s the Big 12 opener for both teams. It’s also Colorado’s first trip to Waco since 2007 and a rematch of the 2024 game the Buffaloes won in overtime after a last-second Hail Mary.
The quarterback matchup sets the tone. Julian Lewis has thrown 658 yards and six touchdowns against two interceptions for Colorado, but the Buffaloes are coming off a 41-7 loss at Northwestern. Baylor expects starter DJ Lagway back from an ankle injury after Nate Bennett went 2-0 in his place, throwing for 567 yards and six touchdowns.
On the ground, Baylor leans on Dawson Pendergrass and his 203 yards on 56 carries, which gives the Bears a steady option if the Colorado pass rush forces them to shorten their throws. That rush has teeth, because Lamont Lester Jr. already has four sacks and will test a Baylor front that has to keep Bennett clean.

Julian Lewis — QB. Through the first stretch of the season, Lewis has completed 50 of 79 passes for 658 yards with six touchdowns and two interceptions. His ability to push the ball downfield on the road will shape how aggressive Colorado can be from the opening drive.
Micah Welch — RB. Welch gives the Buffaloes balance with 178 yards and two touchdowns on 33 carries. A productive day from him would take pressure off Lewis and help Colorado control the clock in a hostile building.
Lamont Lester Jr. — DL. Four sacks already mark Lester as a real problem for opposing quarterbacks. If he wins his matchups early, Baylor’s passing game has to speed up its timing and live with shorter gains.
Baylor Bears
Nate Bennett — QB. Accuracy defines Bennett’s start, as he has hit on 45 of 60 attempts for 567 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Keeping that completion rate intact against a Colorado defense that gets home will decide whether the Bears can sustain drives.
DJ Lagway — QB. The Florida transfer is listed as probable after missing two games with an ankle injury. In his only appearance this season, he threw for 333 yards against Auburn, and his dual-threat ability gives Baylor a different look than it has shown in the past two weeks.
Dawson Pendergrass — RB. With 56 carries for 203 yards and a touchdown, Pendergrass carries a heavy share of the Baylor ground game. His volume matters here because a steady run game is the simplest answer to an opposing pass rush.
Devonte Tezino — DL. On the other side of the ball, Tezino has two sacks and will be tasked with making Lewis uncomfortable in the pocket. Any pressure he generates could swing a game between two evenly matched records.
