Growing up on a farm with his elder brother, Mason (Jim Metzler), Tex McCormick (Matt Dillon) becomes troubled after his mother's death and his father's departure. While Tex and Mason try to live on their own, their individual teen woes threaten their relatively independent existence out in the country. In the meantime, Tex falls for local girl Jamie Collins (Meg Tilly), the sister of his friend, Johnny (Emilio Estevez), and faces disapproval from their strict father, Cole (Ben Johnson).
