Watch TV on the DIRECTV App
The DIRECTV app, it’s the Live TV app + Live Sports app + Free Streaming TV app + Shows & Movies app. Learn where to get it, how to use it and troubleshooting.
Whether you use a satellite or stream with a paid subscription or MyFree DIRECTV, have a Smart TV, mobile phone, tablet, Vizio, Roku, Amazon FireTV, Apple TV or Android TV, the DIRECTV app works for you.
- Just download and sign in with your account DIRECTV User ID and password and you're ready to watch.
- Programming within the DIRECTV app is determined by your selected package and options.
- Available only in the U.S. (excl. Puerto Rico & U.S.V.I.). Requires a compatible device & data connection. Out-of-home streaming limits apply.
Downloading the DIRECTV app to supported devices
Use the app on any supported device. Just download the DIRECTV app from your device’s app store.
Sign-in and watch TV on the DIRECTV app
- Launch the app and sign in with your DIRECTV User ID and password to either watch live TV, access shows and movies on demand or your DVR playlist.
- Programming and available features are dependent on if you have a Satellite or streaming account and package selection.
Enjoy these great features within the app:
User Profiles - everyone in your home can enjoy a customized TV experience, with their own collection of favorite shows and sports teams, cloud-based DVR recordings and more (not available to Satellite customers using the app). User profiles on streaming DIRECTV
Search – Search by title, channel, keyword, or person.
Your TV – your home page, where you'll find your recent channels, can continue watching, and receive recommended viewing personal to you based on your profile. Explore DIRECTV's "Your TV" menu carousel.
My Library – to access your DVR playlist, purchased or rented movies etc., review saved Bookmarks.
- Streaming customers with paid base package, check out Record and watch with cloud DVR.
- Recording feature not available to MyFree DIRECTV.
- Satellite customers must have an internet-connected receiver (models HR44, HR54, HS17 or Gemini) for DVR recording and playback in the DIRECTV App. It may take several minutes for a recording to appear in the DIRECTV app.
- To check your receiver type Press and hold INFO on your DIRECTV remote control until the Info & Test screen appears on your TV. Your model number displays next to Receiver. You can also check the bottom or back of your DVR receiver.
- Recorded content may not be available to stream based on broadcaster restrictions. Many channels have HD and SD versions – make sure you schedule recordings using the HD channel.

Manage your DIRECTV app settings
You can manage your preferences and see important account information under Settings then Preferences:
- Launch Preference - if you want to launch TV on the home screen or last channel viewed
- Are You Still Watching? A pop-up reminder every 4 or 12 hours to see if you're still there.
- Parental Controls
- Captioning
- Autoplay Next Episode
- Home Settings - displays the internet network you're connected to.
- Guide Sort - alphabetical or numerical.
- Allow Notifications
- Game Scores - turn on or off to avoid spoilers.
- etc.
Having trouble with the DIRECTV app?
- If the app crashes or you experience issues, check for recent updates and restart your device.
- Internet download speed can affect your viewing experience. We suggest these internet download speeds: 8Mbps per stream in-home, or 2.5 to 7.5Mbps mobile on-the-go. Test your internet speeds.
- If you have intermittent or slow bandwidth signal, contact your internet service provider for assistance.
- Check your device has the latest operating system, for minimum requirements reference Streaming devices compatible with DIRECTV.
- Check if the DIRECTV App needs an update.
