Starting at the top of your DIRECTV remote, you’ll find 3 buttons. The one on the left is ON, the middle is INPUT, and the right is OFF. Use the middle INPUT button to scroll through and select the equipment connected to your TV.
Directly below these, you’ll find another row of 3 buttons:
- The GUIDE button is on the left. Use it to find shows currently airing. The guide shows what’s on every channel in a grid format, with channels as rows and time (in half-hour increments) as columns. You can check out what’s airing now and up to 14 days from now.
- The home button is in the middle. It displays the home screen.
- The LIST button is on the right. Use it to display your library and DVR recordings.
From the home button, move your finger straight down. You’ll feel a square with buttons inside. Move directly to the small square in the middle. This is the OK button. Press it when you want to choose something. A directional cross surrounds the OK button. It has keys for up, down, left, and right. Each key has a raised triangle indicating the direction. The left arrow also doubles as a back button so you can leave the screen you’re on and go to the previous one.
With your finger on the left directional arrow, you’ll find the record button directly above it and the BACK button directly below it. Press the record button once to record a program you’re watching, or twice to record the entire series. Choose the back button to go back within menus.
With your finger on the right directional arrow, you’ll find the EXIT button directly above it and the overflow button directly below it. Press EXIT to stop playback when watching on demand or recorded content or to exit the menu and return to the last channel watched.
With your finger back on the smooth, square OK button, move to the down arrow, and then slightly below there. You’ll feel 2 distinctly raised bars with a gap in the middle. The bar on the left is for volume, and the bar on the right is for channels. The bars are toggles. Toggle up to increase the volume or channel number, and toggle down to decrease the volume or channel number.
From the center of these 2 bars, move your finger straight down. You’ll find a smooth, round button between 2 smaller oval buttons. The round center button is the MIC button. Press it to give voice commands. The button on the left is the MUTE button. Press this to mute all sound. On the right side, is the PREV button. Press this to return to the previous channel or video.
With your finger on the center round button, move it straight down. You’ll find another row of 3 oval buttons. The left button is to rewind. The center button is to play or pause the program you’re watching. The right button is to fast-forward. You can rewind and fast-forward at increasing speeds by pressing up to 4 times.
The lower third of the remote has 12 round rubber buttons on a number pad arranged like a phone’s keypad. You’ll know you’ve got the bottom of the remote because there’s a flat smooth slope below the last row of rubber buttons.
