WASHINGTON CAPITALS HISTORY
The Washington Capitals were founded in 1974 and now play in the Metropolitan Division. The Capitals entered the NHL as an expansion team and endured one of the worst seasons in league history right out of the gate. They finished 8-67-5 in the 1974-75 season, setting a record for the worst winning percentage in NHL history (.131).
It wasn’t until more than 40 years later that the team won its first, and only, Stanley Cup title in 2018, much in part due to Capitals’ icon and career player, Alex Ovechkin.
Between that first unfortunate season and 2018, the Capitals worked to build the team up in hopes of a victory. Across the team’s 48 season, the Capitals have made the playoffs 32 times, but rarely managed to make it past the second round. The only other Stanley Cup appearance took place in 1998, where they were defeated by the Detroit Red Wings.
