The San Jose Sharks were founded in 1991 and are part of the Pacific Division. The Sharks entered the league as an expansion team, becoming the first NHL team in the San Francisco Bay Area since the California Golden Seals moved to Cleveland in 1976. The franchise chose the Sharks as its name because of the Pacific Ocean’s large population of sharks. The Sharks play their home games at SAP Center in San Jose, California.
