SACRAMENTO KINGS HISTORY

The Sacramento Kings were established in 1923 and are the oldest professional basketball team still in existence in the United States. The Kings were originally founded in New York as the Rochester Seagrams, a semi-professional team at the time.

Several city and name changes followed before they became the Sacramento Kings upon moving to California in 1985. One of those changes was in 1945, when the team joined the National Basketball League and became the Rochester Royals. The team won the championship in its inaugural season in the league.

The Kings won one championship back in 1951 and has yet to win another since. The team had an impressive few years in the early 2000s but have dropped off since. From 2006 to 2022, the Kings had 16 losing seasons in a row, and didn’t make the playoffs again until 2023. In 2023, however, the team finished with a 48-34 record and clinched the Western Conference number 3 seed in the post season.

The Kings play their home games at Golden 1 Center, located in Sacramento, California.

SACRAMENTO KINGS LOGOSacramento Kings 2016 Updated Logo

The Kings have had a few variations of their logo, the most recent redesigning taking place in 2016. The 2016 logo is a modern take on the classic Kings logo, with the team’s updated purple and gray color scheme.

100 Years of Sacramento Kings NBAIn 2023, for the team’s 100th anniversary, a commemorative logo was designed to “encapsulate the essence of the team’s storied journey.” The logo features a 100 inside of a shield with the words “Years of Royalty” bannered across it.

On the top of the shield is a crown, and “Kings” is written at the bottom of the shield. The commemorative logo pays homage to the earlier years when the Kings’ colors were red, white and blue.

SACRAMENTO KINGS 2023-2024 ROSTER

The 2023-2024 NBA season is going to be an interesting one for the Kings, to say the least. After last season’s run in the postseason, the team is looking to capitalize on that momentum. At this point, the team’s core roster is stable, with lynchpin players like Domantas Sabonis, Harrison Barnes and De’Aaron Fox resigned and ready to play.

Those foundational players plus the new additions to the team will leave the Kings in a good position, but they will be up against fierce competition in their conference. And if they can’t get their defense in check, it will be hard to get very far in the playoffs.
