NEW YORK ISLANDERS HISTORY
The New York Islanders were founded in 1972 and are now a part of the Metropolitan Division. At the time, the team was going to be named “The Long Island Ducks” in reference to an Eastern Hockey League team that played from 1959 to 1973. Instead, the team chose the Islanders for their location on Long Island.
The Islanders, who won four straight Stanley Cups from 1980 to 1983, were based in Uniondale, New York, for their first 42 seasons. They spent the next six playing at Barclays Center in Brooklyn and Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale before moving to UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, in 2021, where they continue to play today.
The team has yet to win another Cup title since 1983, but has stayed relatively competitive over the years, making it to the playoffs a total of 28 times in their 50 seasons. The team hit a slump in the late 90s and the late 2000s but became more competitive afterward. But after two seasons of disappointing postseason results (DNQ in 2022 and lost in the first round in 2023), the team is hoping to turn its luck around.
