The New Orleans Pelicans were established in 2002 and are part of the Southwest Division. The Pelicans relocated to New Orleans from Charlotte in 2002 and originally kept the Hornets name. At the end of the 2012-13 season, the franchise changed its name to the New Orleans Pelicans in honor of Louisiana’s state bird.
