NEW JERSEY DEVILS HISTORY
The New Jersey Devils were founded in 1974 as Kansas City Scouts. After struggling to get local support, the team moved to Denver and became the Colorado Rockies in 1976. The franchise moved again, this time to New Jersey, in 1982 and officially became the Devils.
They’re named for the Jersey Devil, a mythological creature that is said to have inhabited the Pine Barrens of South Jersey. The Devils play their home games at Prudential Center in the central business district of Newark, New Jersey.
The New Jersey Devils had a slow start after relocating but have since been known as a successful NHL franchise for decades, and especially during and after the 1990s. It was in the early 90s that a few things happened simultaneously that led to the team’s upward trajectory. The two largest impacts were the introduction of the neutral trap zone thanks to new head coach Jacques Lemaire, as well as the recruitment of a number of promising future stars.
They won their first Stanley Cup in 1995, their second in 2000, and their third in 2003. And while they made it to the finals once more in 2012 and the playoffs nine times, the team has been unable to win it all since then. In fact, fact, they had missed the playoffs for eight of nine seasons.
But after clinching a playoff spot in the 2022-2023 season for the first time since 2018, things were looking promising for the team. That continued as they beat the New York Rangers in the First Round of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2023 but was unfortunately cut short by the Carolina Hurricanes shortly after.
