The Carolina Hurricanes were originally founded as the New England Whalers in 1972. They play in the Metropolitan Division. After seven seasons in the World Hockey Association, the team joined the NHL and became the Hartford Whalers in 1979. In 1997, they moved to North Carolina and rebranded as the Carolina Hurricanes. The Hurricanes won a Stanley Cup in 2006, when they defeated the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final. The Hurricanes play their home games at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina.
