From the big screen to the small screen to totally immersive experiences that put you in the starring role, the future of storytelling is on full display at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T.
Now in its 17th year, the Tribeca Film Festival celebrates independent filmmaking, creative expression and immersive entertainment across platforms. From April 18-29, a diverse collection of creators and audiences will descend upon New York City to enjoy front row seats for the future of entertainment.
And once again, AT&T is at the forefront of some of the festival’s most exciting opportunities, including the prestigious AT&T Presents: Untold Stories program. The inclusive film program is designed to support underrepresented filmmakers with one film chosen to receive a $1 million grant.
This year’s chosen project is Lucky Grandma, co-created by Sasie Sealy and Angela Cheng. The film, which tells the story of a gambling Chinese grandmother that lands in the middle of a Chinese gang war, will debut at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival and across AT&T’s video platforms. Last year’s winner, Faraday Okoro’s Nigerian Prince, will premiere at the festival this year on April 24 with a red carpet and after party.
Tribeca will also offer the first look at Woman Walks Ahead, starring Jessica Chastain, with a premiere and red carpet event April 25. The film tells the story of Catherine Weldon as she travels from Brooklyn to North Dakota in the 1890s for a portrait session with Sitting Bull only to become entangled in the Lakota tribe’s struggle for land rights. If you can’t make the screening, Woman Walks Ahead will premiere on DIRECTV CINEMA® on May 31.
For a more active entertainment experience, festivalgoers can visit the Virtual Arcade, sponsored by AT&T. Twenty-one virtual and augmented reality projects from five countries, including 17 world premieres, will be on display at the Festival Hub (at Spring Studios) from April 20-28. Take a cosmic journey with SPHERES: Pale Blue Dot by Eliza McNitt or experience the social realities of racism via 1000 Cut Journey, among other exhibits.
The festival has also become a showcase for some of television’s most exciting series premieres, and this year is no exception. The hotly anticipated second season of HBO’s Westworld has its New York premiere April 19 with a screening followed by a conversation with co-creators, showrunners, and cast, including Evan Rachel Wood, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright and James Marsden.
Tribeca attendees can also catch a sneak peek at Starz’s provocative new drama Sweetbitter with a world premiere screening April 26. The new series, adapted from the novel of the same name, follows 22-year-old Tess (Ella Purnell) as she has her first taste of New York City’s chaotic culinary scene. After the screening, creator, executive producer, and writer Stephanie Danler will join showrunner Stuart Zicherman and select cast members for a conversation moderated by Katie Couric. (If you can’t make the event in person, check back for an exclusive behind-the-scenes recap here.)
Supporting these innovative storytellers doesn’t have to break the bank. AT&T gave away passes at select New York City stores earlier this month for AT&T’s Free Film Friday scheduled for April 27. And tickets are still on sale for select screenings.
