Disaster Relief

Focus on Disaster Relief

DIRECTV is prepared to use its technology and resources to aid communities in crisis. Because the DIRECTV signal remains on-air during many natural disasters, people can rely on our service for news and information. In the aftermath of a disaster, DIRECTV is able to respond quickly and make innovative contributions to relief efforts. Recent examples include:

    Southern California Wildfires (October 2007)
  • Deployed mobile Sat-Go units to the Los Angeles Fire Department to create mobile command centers with access to real-time information updates
  • Installed DIRECTV systems in shelters throughout San Diego County to give displaced residents access to vital news and information during the crisis
  • Made a significant cash contribution to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund to aid efforts in both Los Angeles and San Diego counties, and created a special on-going gift matching opportunity for DIRECTV employees
    Perú Earthquake (August 2007)
  • DIRECTV Perú deployed installation crews to set up DIRECTV systems in the hardest hit zones to provide access to needed news and information shortly after the earthquake hit
  • Sent trucks filled with clothes and water to affected areas throughout the region
  • Instituted a company-wide matching program for DIRECTV employees in the U.S. and Latin America, in conjunction with a cash contribution to the International Red Cross
    Hurricane Katrina (September 2005)
  • Offered complimentary equipment, installations and programming for 136 shelters, including the Houston Astrodome
  • Created a dedicated Katrina Information Center on Channel 100 complete with text message and e-mail functionality that helped displaced people locate their loved ones
  • Made significant cash contributions to relief organizations, including $60,000 to match employee donations.
