According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 90 million Americans live with chronic illnesses. Every year, seven out of 10 Americansmore than 1.7 million peoplesuccumb to a chronic disease.
DIRECTV works with local communities to support causes that promote healthy lifestyles and prevent life-threatening illnesses. Such programs include:
Our flagship health-related program, Fast Forward to a Cure, raises significant dollars through fitness-focused charitable walks. We encourage DIRECTV employees nationwide to team up and get involved in annual 5K run/walks that the company sponsors.
Although Fast Forward to a Cure events take place in different cities, participating teams all share the same goal: to raise money and awareness for a good cause. Our DIRECTV blue is easily spotted at these events, as "Team DIRECTV" wears matching shirts emblazoned with our logo and the "Fast Forward to a Cure" slogan.
Here are some of the Fast Forward to a Cure events DIRECTV employees are participating in this year:
Relay for Life: American Cancer Society, Huntsville, Ala.
Revlon Run/Walk For Women: Entertainment Industry Foundation (supporting women's cancers), Los Angeles, Calif. and New York City, N.Y.
American Heart Walk: American Heart Association, Denver, Colo. and Missoula, Mont.
Women's Fitness Celebration: St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center, Boise, Idaho
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation: Walk to Cure Diabetes: Tulsa, Okla.
For the nearly 5 million people who receive transfusions every year, blood donations can mean the difference between life and death. DIRECTV helps maintain the nation's blood supply by holding on-site blood drives several times a year and providing employees with the ability to donate at work.
To encourage and recognize our employees' philanthropic interests, DIRECTV matches employee donations to U.S.-based 501(c)(3) organizations dollar-for-dollar (up to $20,000 per employee per year).
